ADOPTION
We know you have spent a great deal of time in your selection of the clumber spaniel breed of dogs, and we are pleased that you have contacted Critter Clumber Spaniels. We believe there are a few things you should consider before bringing a new Clumber puppy into your life...

Things You Should Know

  • Clumbers need a lot of water, especially in the summer. Keep fresh water available at all times. A drool towel by the water dish is handy to wipe their mouth after a big drink.
  • Clumber eyes are very deep set and droop. Debris might collect in this pocket. Clean your puppy's eyes every morning and night with a warm washcloth to minimize staining from tearing.
  • Clumber ear leather is very thick and does not allow for sufficient air circulation to the ear. To avoid yeast and bacterial infections use OtiClense (facial cleanser works great too) on a cotton ball every couple of weeks to clean the inside of the ear. Follow this with a puff of ear drying powder.
  • The Clumber coat will stay clean and white with minimal care. A good brushing on a regular basis will keep it in top condition and hold down shedding. One area to pay special attention to is behind and under the ears and elbows. The hair there is very soft and can mat easily. Keep this hair neatly trimmed.
  • The Clumber is a very social breed and will not thrive if relegated to the status of yard dog. It is critical that you take the time to socialize your clumber with many people, dogs, and new experiences. Clumber puppies are very lovable and must be given adequate socialization. Many clumbers are very easy-going and do not believe in expending any more energy than is absolutely necessary to get the job done. They are devoted to their masters and prefer to be with them at all times. They believe that they are lap dogs and will be content to lie beside you with their head in your lap, happily snoring. Some Clumbers are addicted to their toys and will constantly play with them, carrying them wherever they go. These clumbers are excellent retrievers and love to play with you.
  • Cut his nails at least once a month, and trim the hair away from the bottom of the pads and feet.
  • Clumbers are very sensitive and very eager to please because their relationship to you is the most important thing to them. Use lots of praise when doing any kind of training.
  • Clumbers love to carry things in their mouths, and if there isn't anything of theirs handy, they will pick up something of yours. Clumber adults (sometime after 2-3 years) are not usually destructive. Puppies are very bad. Keep plenty of safe chew toys (doggie kong, nylabones, and tennis balls) available at all times, and most important, do not leave your clumber puppy unsupervised with the run of the house or back yard. You may return to an unstuffed pillow or the family photo album in shreds. If puppies begin to chew up and swallow their toys, remove the toys. Clumbers have been known to die from eating panty hose, etc. If your clumber puppy will be alone at times, make sure you have a safe, restricted area for him to stay in. This is for his safety as well as for your peace of mind. We advocate that you use a dog crate. You will find that very quickly he will consider the crate his space, his bedroom, and you will find him curled up in it, sound asleep.
  • The clumber spaniel has faced extinction many times. It has a very small gene pool, making advancement in the breed a slow process. While it is not our, or any conscientious breeder's intent to popularize our breed, we do seek to improve it. the improvements in the last ten years regarding soundness and health are very encouraging.
  • We encourage you, if you adopt a Clumber puppy from us, to contact us regularly and especially if you have any questions or concerns. Your clumber spaniel puppy may be your dog now, but first he was our baby.
  • Enjoy your clumber spaniel puppy to the very limit!
Pet vs. Show Puppies

Pet Puppy "Pet" means that this animal is sold as a family pet only and is not considered as breeding or show quality as defined by the Clumber Spaniel breed standard. A breeder may have several puppies in a litter which may be considered as show prospects. The rest will be fine, healthy puppies that will captivate the prospective buyer. Here is an excellent chance to acquire a well-bred, professionally raised puppy. Pet puppies must not be bred and must be neutered to meet the terms of the sales agreement.

Show/Breeding Potential Puppy means this animal goes beyond the definition of a pet dog and is considered of high enough quality to have the potential of maturing into a dog of high show and breeding quality. This puppy should have the potential to improve the quality of the Clumber Spaniel breed, and not just produce more puppies. With proper care on the part of the buyer, in due time the dog should be of acceptable structure and temperament to meet the specific standard of the breed. Such an animal is obviously most select, much sought after, and represents a very high value, both in terms of prestige and money.

All of our breeding stock have been CERF checked for eye problems, have been X-rayed for occurrence of hip and elbow dysplasia, and have been tested for PDH status (pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency). We also breed for the best of temperaments.
