The puppies out of Ch Nexus Blind Faith and Ch Companionways Against The Wind.

I am excited about the pedigree options that come from this newest litter produced by Faith and sired by Ch Companionway’s Against The Wind.  I wanted to breed Solitaire to Bentley about 6 years ago and that breeding never was able to happen.  When I bred Faith to Spice Twice Athos “Snow”, one of the big pluses for that breeding was that Snow is a Bentley grandson from his mother’s side of the pedigree. 

 A big plus for the breeding was that Bentley is OFA Good and CERFed clear.   Another huge plus for this breeding is that it really opens things up pedigree wise for Nexus.  Bentley was born in 1991 and is a son of Ch Companionway’s Wild As the Wind and Ch Companionway Call To Glory.  Wild as the Wind is from a breeding of a Swedish dog and a Swedish bitch and both of them go back to English bloodlines that were exported to Sweden.  Call To Glory goes back to old east coast bloodlines that outside of Connie’s breeding program are hardly seen any more.  Bentley brings in some old bloodlines since Wild As The Wind was born in 1987 and Call To Glory was born in 1984.   The combination of lightly used bloodlines and old bloodlines brings some significant pedigree diversification for Nexus.

I look at my own pedigrees and I find them dominated by the offspring from 3 prominent sires; Ch Raycroft Springsteen, Ch Smokerise Country Gentleman and Ch First Dawn of Tavarosh.  I think all of those sires are fantastic dogs and they are great producers and their offspring have been great producers. 

First Generation breedings 

Bruce is the sire of my foundation bitch Klumberhill Long Goodbye and we bred a Bruce daughter to a Bruce grandson when we did the litter that produced Solitaire.   We also bred Klumberhill Long Goodbye to a dog that is a Virgil son and his mother is a Virgil granddaughter.   We have bred to Wilbur and a half brother of Wilbur’s.  We have bred three times to Wilbur sons and we have been thrilled with the breedings.  My direct connection to Paris is through a breeding with Askani to Ch Clussexx Billy Goats Gruff, a Paris son.  This litter produced a couple of nice bitches that also produced a number of good dogs for us.

Unlike a lot of small breeding programs we didn’t use our own stud dogs in our early breedings.  We didn’t use one of our dogs in a breeding until our 8^th litter.  We didn’t breed a Nexus dog to a Nexus bitch until out 14^th litter.  I continue to believe that even though we have a number of top quality stud dogs at our disposal, my job is to try and find the best dog in the world to breed our top bitches to.  And when I honestly look at each breeding, I quite often find that even though we have very nice males, they may not be the BEST breeding that I can do with the bitch. 

We are always looking for good dogs to breed to.  And as I look for possible dogs to breed my bitches to, I see that many of what I consider to be the best dogs in the country are also going back to those three sires or their direct descendants.  It seems like a significant number of breeders in this country and a number of foreign countries with significant clumber populations have all headed down a very narrow path.
