Riki was a lovely, typey, gray puppy. She didn't settle in at Carol Murray's house, so she came to Beeken at about three months old. There was the tiniest bit of fawn fluff behind her ears. Funny thing but at every coat change she became redder and redder. By age four, she was clearly mahogany and black.
Riki had some spectacular wins in conformation, including:
- Best in Sweeps at the 1992 ABTC National Specialty Sweepstakes under breeder Linda Newsome
- Multiple group placings including a Group 1 in 1994 under judge Neena VanKamp
- 1994 CKC/BSCC National Specialty Best of Winners
- 1994 ABTC National Specialty Select under Canadian breeder-judge Skip Stanbridge
We also had our day in the sun (literally) on the way to Riki's CD. It was a beautiful, hot, sunny outdoors show (Mt. Pleasant KC, 1997) and Riki astonished all by turning in a lovely novice performance to finish her CD and win High-In-Trail. She was an off-and-on obedience dog but we were working diligently on her CDX when she came up limping. A frustrating year of crate rest, gentle exercise and, finally, surgery did not improve the situation. Riki was just as happy to retire to the couch.
